Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)

Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist who has been credited with painting the first modern abstract works: typically, he used broad swathes of colour to paint landscapes and towns.  An accomplished musician, he fervently believed that musical harmony and colour were linked and even claimed that he could hear music when he saw colour.
